In August 2016, my husband and I spent some time in the delightful city of Guilin. Our superb accommodation at the Aroma Tea House, was due to the wonderful service of the staff and their untiring desire to make our stay comfortable and interesting. When they learned that I was an Art Teacher, Ms. Tang organised for her daughter, Yu Qing, who spoke perfect English, and was an artist in her own right, to take me to the Guilin Art Gallery...to see their collection, and to experience a class of young students working under the guidance of a master artist/teacher.

The resulting experience was one of the most memorable highlights of my visit to China.Yu Qing, who had spent a year in Chicago, U.S.A., studying at artschool, explained the processes the students were involved in, and through her interpretation, I was able to understand that the students were learning silk painting techniques based on the traditional Chinese silk painting styles. YU Qing, was also a student in this particular class, but at the Aroma Tea House, offers to teach visitors the art of calligraphy.

I was served refreshing tea, and my time at the gallery ended with a "guided tour " with explanations of all the works exhibited. This is a small private gallery, but the experience I had there was huge. I have to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen, especially Ms. Tang and her daughter , and also the patient, and very friendly teacher and students of the class for allowing me to interrupt their lesson.
