Guilin City – A Breif History

Guilin city takes pride in its rich history that stretches way back to 10,000 years, when it was the origin of the Zengpiyan People; a matriarchal society.

Guilin was not considered as an official prefecture until 214 B.C. when the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.) set up the Guilin State. Soon Guilin City became one of the gateways between the Central Plains and the Lingnan Region (currently Guangdong Province, Guangxi Province and part Hunan, and Jiangxi Province) on account of the construction of the Ling Canal. Later during the reign of the Third Eastern Han Dynasty (25 - 220), the State county was founded is Guilin.

From then, Guilin became a strategically important location for many ambitious schemers. During the Three Kingdom Period (220 - 280), outrageous war fares took place. Guilin was govern by the Shu State and the Wu State successively. Eventually, Guilin was gradually developed to be a political focal point. In the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), Guilin was renamed Lingui County and built to be an impressive southern prefecture.

Fast forward to the Song Dynasty (960 - 1127), the territory of this region was extended to the current Hainan Island. As for the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) Dynasty, the significant location of Guilin Region in both economic and political standpoints was formidable.

Benefiting from an intricate yet stable political situation, localism in Guilin received further development. Guilin City was also once the center of the mentioned Lingnan Culture. Fortunately, there are still numerous of historic sites in Guilin for visitors to appreciate, and to experience the mesmerizing culture in this region. For instance, the ancient Mansion of Prince Jingjiang is the best preserved mansion of the Prince of the Ming Dunasty and the Solitary Beauty Peak located in the mansion is a must go for visitors.

Due to its abundant natural resources and geographically advantageous location, Guilin because a well-know city both for the revolutionists and the warlords in the modern era of China, especially during the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan during WWII; in which Guilin was the resistance base with a great number of active intellectuals.
